Drink me, I’m Irish

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone.  With all of the drinking going on, I really got to thinking about how crazy we are about alcohol.  I mean everyone loves the stuff (not that there is anything wrong with that).

From what I’ve seen in recent years of being in college and living in Philadelphia, St. Patrick’s Day has been one of those days when everyone roams the street to celebrate drinking (and drinking a lot).   Green beer, green shirts, Guinness, car bombs, you don’t have to be Irish to celebrate; although I would highly doubt you can find many people who actually know the origins of the holiday.  They just like to drink a lot, and have a large group of people with them that are doing the exact same thing.  This year, we seemed to have the luxury of two St. Pat’s weekends with the 17th falling on a Saturday.  Last weekend was the parade, shutting down half of the city; along with the multiple beer tours.  Today, more beer tours, and plenty of Philadelphians participating in different bar crawls with different themes and goals.  Again, I don’t think anything is wrong with that as long as nobody does anything too stupid, harming someone or themselves.  Remember, stupid decisions made while drunk are still your decisions (plus you made the decision to drink in the first place).

It’s really a wonder how prohibition happened…who would vote for that?  The extent that I see people enjoy drinking their beer/wine/liquor shows that there must have been some very sober Senators to introduce the Amendment as a noble experiment.  Then somehow 36 states approved it.  I’m glad everyone came to their senses 13 years later, since I enjoy my alcohol too, but unfortunately cannot drink much of it.  Getting drunk really doesn’t appeal to me much now that I’m out of college, but that won’t be stopping me from enjoying a good beer or two if the proper setting presents itself.  I’m thankful to have the option to have drinks with friends on certain occasions.

I hope everyone stays safe out there.  I live a block away from a street full of bars, so I can hear all of the craziness that goes on after the bars close on weekend nights.  Enjoy the beautiful weekend!
